HOUSTON – The Rice Owls volleyball team notched their fourth consecutive win with a four-set victory (14-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) over the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday morning at Tudor Fieldhouse in the Rice Adidas Invitational II.
In the process, Rice head coach Genny Volpe recorded her 250th career victory, improving to 250-164 (.603) in her 14th season at the helm for the Owls.
The Owls (9-4) held Georgetown (6-6) to just a .173 hitting percentage in the win, led by a spectacular performance from sophomore libero Lee Ann Cunningham. The Louisville, Ky. Native compiled a personal best 35 digs, which tied Daniela Arenas (2013) and Tracey Lam (2007) for the fourth-most digs in a single match in Rice history.
Freshman Lauren Lee (18 digs) also helped contribute to a season-best 87 team digs for the Owls. Sophomore setter Adria Martinez collected an additional 11 digs to go along with 41 assists for her second career double-double in as many career starts.
Offensively, freshman outside hitter Nicole Lennon once again led the way for the Owls with 21 kills (.263) on 57 attacks. It was the Katy, Texas native’s fourth, 20-kill performance of the season and her second such achievement this weekend.
Rice will attempt to win their fifth straight match later this evening when they host Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the season.
