HOUSTON- Jillian Humphrey received All-Rice Invitational honors for her 39 kills and 11 blocks during the weekend, but Rice dropped the final match of the tournament 3-1 to NC State.
Humphrey had 10 kills in Saturday's match, and added in six blocks and four digs. Noelle Whitlock led the team Saturday with 14 kills and added in 19 digs for a double double.
Daniela Arenas had 22 digs, giving her 57 for the tournament (5.70 per set), including the fourth-best single match total in program history with 35 on Friday against HBU. She has double digit digs in seven straight matches.
NC State (8-1), an NCAA Tournament squad in 2012, took the first set 25-15 off of .448 hitting. Humphrey had five kills in the set for Rice, but it was not enough. The Wolfpack followed that effort with .300 hitting in the second set to win 25-20.
Rice (3-7) posted a gritty 28-26 victory in the third set, getting two blocks from Humphrey to finish the set. Humphrey, a middle blocker who was forced into making four tough digs in the set, had six blocks in total during the third set. The Wolfpack closed the match with a 25-20 fourth set victory
Rice's volleyball squad returns to action on Sept. 18, as they host former Southwest Conference rival Baylor at 7 p.m.
