Honolulu - Rice hustled and worked hard to tie the match at 2-2 after being down 0-2, but Pacific prevailed in the decisive fifth set 15-11 for the 3-2 victory at Hawai'i's Verizon Volleyball Challenge in the Stan Sherrif Center. Set scores were 22-25, 21-25, 27-25, 27-25, 11-15. The Owls drop to 3-5 while Tigers improve to 7-3.
Rice was led by freshman Lizzy Bache's career-high 21 kills. Also in double-digits were Nancy Cole and Mariah Riddlesprigger with 12 kills each. Megan White had 27 digs, a match-high, while Owl setter Megan Murphy had a match-high 58 assists.
The Tigers were led by Samantha Misa's match-high 25 kills, while Gillian Howard had 17 kills (.424) and Jennifer Sanders added 16 kills. Both teams were even in the hitting percentage department with Pacific a slight edge at .201 to Rice's .199. The Tigers also had 72 kills to the Owls' 67 and 92 digs to Rice's 90.
The Owls are return to action next weekend as they compete at Chilly Fillmore's SFA Invitational vs. North Dakota, Sam Houston State, and SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas.
