HOUSTON, Texas - The Rice Owls volleyball team won their third consecutive match with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Tuesday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (5-3) recorded their fourth, straight sets victory of the season and solidified their best start through eight matches since the 2009-10 campaign. The victory over the Islanders was also the Owls 16th straight over a Southland Conference foe dating back to the 2008 season.
Owls' sophomore Leah Mikesky and Sara Blasier each registered double-doubles in the victory, the fifth straight for Mikesky and the fifth overall for Blasier. Mikesky finished with 10 kills and 13 digs while Blasier dished out a three-set, personal-best 39 assists and had 11 digs. Sophomore Chelsey Harris led Rice with 11 kills and hit .409 for the match while also collecting her first three service aces of the year.
Senior Jillian Humphrey had a solid all-around game as well, tallying nine kills (.533 attack percentage) and four blocked assists. Senior Kimberly Vaio led Rice in digs with 19.
Brianna Brink led the Islanders (3-4) with 11 kills while Kristyn Nicholson recorded 24 assists.
The Owls got 11 combined kills from Mikesky (6) and Harris (5) in the opening set and finished with a .273 team hitting percentage (17-of-44) and an 85 percent (17-of-20) sideout percentage. Despite seven ties in the early going, Rice never trailed and broke a 12-12 tie by outscoring the Islanders 13-7 the rest of the way. Blasier also dished out 14 assists in the set and had four digs.
Rice led from start to finish in the second set en route to a 25-18 win. The Owls hit .432 for the set thanks in part to 16 assists from Blasier. Harris had five kills in the set, followed by four each from Lizzy Bache and Mikesky.
The Owls saved their best for last in the third set, defeating the Islanders 25-14 while hitting .308. After falling behind 2-0, the Owls reeled off 13 of the next 14 points to pull away and never look back.
Rice will next hit the road for the Marquette Invitational this upcoming weekend when they face Green Bay (1 p.m.) and Marquette (6 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 12. The Owls will then face James Madison Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.
