HOUSTON- Rice's volleyball team fell 3-2 to UALR in their second match of the Rice Invitational I. Four Owls reached double figures in kills, including Stephanie Mendivil, who matched her career-high with 15.
Rice (1-5) played a five set match for the third time in five matches this season, but is 0-3 in those three matches. UALR (2-3) hit over .350 in each of the final three sets.
Lizzy Bache hit .722 with 13 kills, and did not make an attacking error in the match. She has 24 kills and just four attacking errors in the tournament.
Mendivil matched her career high, first set a week ago against Santa Clara, with 15 kills.
Jillian Humphrey also reached double figures in kills with 17 to lead the team. The Preseason All-C-USA pick has reached double figures in kills each match this season.
Noelle Whitlock picked up her second double double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs.
Mendivil had seven kills and hit .500 in the opening set, helping the Owls close out the set on an 8-1 run to take a 25-20 victory over UALR.
The Owls battled back from a 22-20 deficit to take the last five points of the set for a second set triumph of 25-22.
UALR jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the third set, but Rice immediately responded with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 18, before the Trojans took the set 25-19.
Rice broke two set points in the fourth set to tie the set at 24 but the Trojans won the set 26-24, before the Trojans won the fifth set 15-11.
The Owls take on LSU at 7 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse.
