HOUSTON- Rice's volleyball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 at Tudor Fieldhouse, the first match of Rice Invitational I and the home opener for the Owls. The victory extended Rice's home winning streak to six matches, dating back to September 2012.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "They came out real focused and playing real sharp defense."
Rice (1-3) has won five of its last six home openers, and has not lost a set in a home opener since 2011. Rice has not lost in Tudor Fieldhouse since Sept. 30, 2012, a span of 341 days.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-3) was held to .062 hitting by the Owls, while Rice hit .250 for the match.
After the Islanders tied the first set at 8 points, Rice closed out the set with a 17-10 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Lizzy Bache took over the first part of the second start, getting three kills and a solo block to lead Rice on a 7-0 run, as Rice took the second set 25-17.
Rice took the final set 25-19 finishing the set and the match on a 5-1 run.
The Owls continue the Rice Invitational I at 12 p.m. Saturday as they take on UALR.
