RALEIGH, N.C. – The Rice Owls volleyball team capped off a superb Saturday with a three-game sweep (26-24, 25-19, 28-26) of the Toledo Rockets to finish with a 2-1 record and second place finish in the Courtyard Midtown Classic.
Rice (4-3), riding the momentum of a five-set morning victory over the UConn Huskies, won their fourth game of the season 23 days (Sept. 29) sooner than they did in 2013.

had a complete match with 35 assists, eight kills (.538 attack percentage), and six digs. Kimberly Vaio
led the Owls in digs for the second time on the day with 14. Blasier and Vaio were each named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
Rice hit a respectable .259 for the match while holding Toledo (0-7) to just .142 as a team.
The Owls actually struggled against Toledo (0-6) in an opening set that saw 13 ties and nine lead changes, but Rice rallied from a 23-21 deficit to outscore the Rockets 5-1 for the set victory. Rice hit just .176 for the set but managed to hold Toledo to a .000 attack percentage thanks in part to 11 attack errors.
In the second set Rice took a 12-11 advantage and never relinquished the lead again, hitting .257 for the set and taking a 2-0 match lead. The Owls stared set-point (25-24) in the face in the third set before rallying to outscore the Rockets 4-2 the rest of the way.
The Owls will return home to Tudor Fieldhouse to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in the final mid-week non-conference match of the season.
