Waco, Texas - Rice's two match winning-streak came to a halt at the Baylor Classic as the Owls lost 3-1 to the host Baylor Bears at the Ferrell Center. Game scores were 14-25, 18-25, 25-16, and 22-25.
Rice is now 5-2 on the year and Baylor improves to 7-0.
After losing the first two sets, the Owls were more fiery in the third set outhitting Baylor .308 (16-4-39) to .000 (8-8-42). Leading the charge was the powerful hitting of freshman Ashleigh McCord who pounded 6 kills into the hardwood in hitting .400 (6-2-10).
"In the third set we attacked faster and showed them different look," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "The team's mentality was so different and they just went after it. We need to play free and play to win and trust our abilities."
Set four was tight throughout. After being tied at 13-13, Baylor went up 17-14 before Rice closed in at 20-21. A Karyn Morgan smash tied it up at 22-22. A block and a hitting miscue gave a Baylor 24-22 lead that it would not relinquish.
"Every match we play a different player shines and that shows how much talent we have on this team," commented Volpe. "Ashleigh (McCord) came out in set three on a mission. We changed her position to give her a different look and she was able to attack more balls."
Morgan and McCord led the Owls with 14 kills. Morgan also had 13 digs. Jenn McClean led Rice with 17 digs and setter Meredith Schamun had 38 assists.
Baylor out-blocked Rice 12.5 to 4.0 and had 55 kills to the Owls' 48.
The Owls' next match is Friday vs. Oklahoma at the SFA Ladyjack Invitational in Nacogdoches, Texas.
