BOULDER, Colo. – The Rice Owls volleyball team kept a perfect slate at the Colorado Omni Invitational by defeating the Abilene Christian Wildcats in four sets (25-17, 24-26, 25-18, 25-21) Saturday morning at the Coors Events Center.
Rice (4-2) backed up a Friday sweep of Wake Forest with their second win in as many days, limiting ACU (1-4) to a .065 hitting percentage. The Owls recorded season-highs in kills (65), total attacks (168), assists (60), service aces (7) and points (79.0).
Junior middle blocker McKay Kyle led the Owls with a match-high 14 kills on 30 attacks (.333) while freshman outside hitter Seyvion Waggoner set a season-high with 13 kills and sophomore middle Grace Morgan added an additional 11 kills. Senior setter Madison McDaniel filled the box score with 48 assists, nine digs, seven kills, and five blocks. Sophomore libero Lee Ann Cunningham led the Owls with 21 digs while junior Julianna Dole added 11 digs and had two service aces.
Rice hit a sizzling .421 in the opening frame and took the lead for good when they broke a 10-10 tie by going on a 10-4 run. ACU bounced back in set two, erasing a 15-11 Rice lead and breaking a 24-24 tie with the final two points to win 26-24.
The Owls found their footing late in set three when they used an 8-1 run, including three kills off the bench from Stephanie Mendivil, to defeat the Wildcats 25-18. ACU played Rice tough in the final frame but the Owls closed the set on a 4-0 run, which included a pair of aces from Dole to seal the victory.
The Owls look to win their second tournament of the season later tonight when they face host Colorado at 8 p.m. (CT).
