Humphrey Named All-Bulldog Invitational, But Volleyball Falls

FRESNO, Calif.- Rice's Jillian Humphrey was named to the All-Tournament team, and freshman Stephanie Mendivil had a breakout performance, but the Owls fell 3-1 to Santa Clara in a volleyball match at the Bulldog Invitational.

The Owls (0-3) won five sets in the tournament, but fell to three squads that won 19+ matches in 2012 and were ranked in the top 100 of the RPI. Santa Clara (2-1) was ranked 48th in the RPI during 2012 and finished 9-7 in the West Coast Conference.

Mendivil, who made her collegiate debut Saturday, had 15 kills, including eight in the second set. She hit .368 in the match.

Noelle Whitlock (12) and Jillian Humphrey (10) reached double figures in kills as well. Humphrey reached double figures in kills every match this tournament, and added in nine blocks in this match

Whitlock also led the squad in digs with 15, posting her first double double of the year. Kimberly Vaio had 14 digs to reach double figures for the third straight match this season.

Rice bounced back from a 25-12 first set loss to win the second set 25-19.

Santa Clara won the third set 25-17 and fourth set 26-24.

The Owls open the season at home on Sept. 6 with the start of Rice Invitational I, with Texas A&M Corpus Christi visiting at 6:30 p.m.
