HOUSTON, Texas – The Rice Owls volleyball squad bounced back from a tough defeat to the UL Ragin’ Cajuns with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs in the final match of the Rice Invitational Saturday evening.

“I was really happy with the team this evening because this morning was pretty sloppy and undisciplined,” Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. “We went and watched film of ourselves from this morning before tonight’s match to see their mistakes and from the very first point you could see them making the changes. We were so much more disciplined on defense and we weren’t guessing and stuck to our game plan. The bottom line is we didn’t hesitate and played super aggressive. Leah Mikesky led the way for us and set the tone.”
Rice (2-1) placed second in the Adidas Rice Invitational I tournament with the victory and recorded their second, straight-sets win of the year. Fresno State (1-2) hit just .150 percent for the match and had 24 attack errors.
Mikesky recorded a Rice season-high with 18 kills on 34 attacks (.500) and came up one dig shy of a double-double en route to being named to the Rice Invitational I All-Tournament Team. Joining Mikesky on the all-tournament squad was Sara Blasier, who finished with 35 assists and seven digs.
Jillian Humphrey (9 kills) nearly finished in double-figures in kills and the Owls had three players in double-digits in digs, led by 15 from Daniela Arenas. Kimberly Vaio (10 digs) and Shelby Livingstone (10 digs) were the other two Owls to post double-figure digs.
After a 25-18 win in set one, the Owls played a near flawless second set, leading start to finish towards a 25-14 victory. Rice hit .387 (13-for-31) for the game and had an 80 percent sideout percentage. Rice also took advantage of nine attacking errors by the Bulldogs.
The Owls never trailed in the final set after claiming a 4-3 lead despite the Bulldogs closing the gap to 23-22 late. Rice responded with Mikesky’s 18th kill of the night, followed by an attacking error from the Bulldogs to seal the win.
Louisiana-Lafayette claimed the outright Rice Invitational title by going 3-0 over the weekend, followed by Rice (2-1), Fresno State (1-2) and UC Davis (0-3).
Rice will next go on the road for the first time this season and travel to Waco to face the Baylor Bears, beginning at 6 p.m.
