Houston - The Rice Owls volleyball team lost its first match of the season 3-0 to Mississippi in the Rice Invitational inside Tudor Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, and 25-21. With the victory, Ole Miss claimed the Rice Invitational championship trophy.
Ashleigh McCord led Rice (2-1) with 11 kills, while Tracey Lam posted a match-high 17 digs. Meredith Schamun led Rice with 19 assists, while redshirt freshman Megan Murphy saw her first collegiate action at the setter position and carded 5 assists and 8 digs.
Ole Miss (2-1) was led by Allegra Wells' 11 kills and 4 blocks as the Rebels had 42 kills and a .252 hitting percentage. Rice, on the other hand, had 32 kills and a .125 hitting percentage.
With the score tied at 9, Ole Miss proceeded to go on an 11 to 6 run for a 20-15 lead. Back-to-back kills by Rice freshmen Megan Shepard and Mariah Riddlesprigger brought the Owls to within four at 23-19, but the Rebels were able to close out the set to win 25-19. Mississippi hit .290 with 14 kills, while Rice managed 9 kills and a .129 attack percentage. Miranda Kitts led Ole Miss with 4 kills, while Nancy Cole led Rice with three kills.
It was all Ole Miss in set two as the Rebels began the set with a 10-2 lead and kept it up to make it 16-6 by hitting .727 with 8 kills to the Owls' 4 kills. Rice did not give up though and closed to within three at 23-20 but it was too late as Ole Miss wound up winning 25-20. Rice tallied 10 kills in the set, but the Rebels connected for 14 kills. McCord led Rice with 4 kills, while Kara Morgan led Mississippi with 4 kills as well.
The Owls started strong in the third and were ahead 16-12 following a Justyna Brewczyk kill. Ole Miss then outscored the Owls 7 to 1 for a 19-17 lead before winning 25-21. Allegra Wells led the Rebels with 6 kills in the decisive set, while McCord led the Owls with 5 kills.
The Owls are in action next weekend when they compete at Pepperdine's Asics Classic in Malibu, Calif.
