TCU 3-Rice 0 (PDF Box Score)
FORT WORTH, Texas - Freshman Seyvion Waggoner led the Rice Owls volleyball team with 11 kills in a losing effort (24-26, 19-25, 22-25) at TCU on Sunday afternoon.
"We're obviously not happy with the outcome today but I am so proud of this team," Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. "With all the stress of the weather back home they stayed focused and really played hard today. Seyvion was great. TCU had a hard time with her and she took big time swings at pivotal times. We have to clean up our defensive game but this match taught us a lot and we will get back to work."
Rice (2-2) had two fewer hitting errors than TCU (3-0) but the Horned Frogs outhit the Owls by a margin of .222-.164.
Waggoner posted her first double-figures kills performance all while hitting .375 (11-of-24). Senior setter Madison McDaniel averaged over 10 assists per set with 31 total in three sets while Lee Ann Cunningham paced the Rice defensive effort with 18 digs.
Rice looked poised to take the opening frame from TCU by building a 20-17 lead after a Waggoner kill but TCU responded with a 9-4 run to win 26-24.
The Horned Frogs hit .405 in set two and led from start to finish in a 25-19 victory before closing out the Owls 25-22 in the third set.
The Owls are next scheduled to travel to Colorado next weekend to face Wake Forest, Abilene Christian and host Colorado.
