Rice assistant track and field coach Andrea Blackett, a native of Barbados, served as the head track and field coach for the Barbados contingent at the recently concluded 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Fortunately for riceowls.com, Blackett did not forget her camera.
A veteran international competitor, Blackett has represented Barbados in the past six IAAF World Championships, qualifying for the final four times and placing fourth in 1999. In 2000 she competed in the Sydney Olympics, making it to the semifinal of the 400 hurdles, and she also competed in that event in 2004 at the Athens Olympics. She has a personal best of 53.36 in the 400 hurdles, which is also a national record for Barbados. She set the Barbados 100 hurdles record of 13.39 in 2003. Blackett is ranked sixth in the world by the IAAF and continues her training under the tutelage of former Owls' head coach Victor Lopez.
