Four Owls Earn C-USA Scholar-Athlete Awards

July 14, 2017 IRVING, TexasTommy Bennett, Katherine Ip, Elsa Racasan and Ayane Rossano have all been named recipients of the 2016-17 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year awards for their respective sports, C-USA Faculty Athletics Representative announced on Friday (July 14).

Rice led the league with the four Scholar-Athlete selections, followed by Marshall with three representatives. It marked the sixth time Rice had four or more student-athletes chosen as a C-USA Scholar Athlete since joining the conference in 2005.

Bennett (men’s tennis), from England, finished the season with a 7-1 mark at the second line in singles while leading the Owls to their first consecutive conference titles since 1969-72. He qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship with David Warren for a second straight year. Bennett, who was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team for a third time, earned a place on the All-C-USA Singles second team, as well as a place on the All-C-USA Doubles First Team. He graduated with a 3.67 GPA while majoring in Economics.

Ip (women’s tennis), a native of Hong Kong, finished her senior season with a 12-3 record in singles competition while posting a career winning percentage of 74%. For the fourth straight year, Katherine was named to the All-C-USA Singles First Team while also earning a place on the All-C-USA Doubles Third Team. Ip was the recipient of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship in 2017 and was a CoSIDA Academic At-Large All-District Seven honoree. She graduated with a 3.99 GPA while majoring in Kinesiology and Health Sciences.

Racasan (women’s cross country), a native of Lugrin, France, helped the Owls win a C-USA team championship with a 10th place finish at the C-USA Championships followed by a 24th place result at the NCAA South Central Regional. The junior, who was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team for a second straight year, boasts a 4.12 GPA while majoring in Kinesiology.

Rossano (women’s track & field), a junior from Bellevue, Wash., earned C-USA All-Conference honors in the pole vault during the outdoor and indoor seasons and was a member of the C-USA All-Academic Team. Rossano holds a 3.95 GPA while double majoring in Kinesiology/Biochemistry.

The C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport, determined by a vote of the league’s 14 FARs. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.

Scholar-athletes were selected from C-USA’s full-time and affiliate institutions in 19 sports (combining indoor and outdoor track & field).
