IRVING - Rice University sprinter Brittany Washington was one of 12 student-athletes to receive the spring Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, league commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Wednesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their sport. The award is presented three times during the academic year. Wednesday's honorees represent Conference USA's spring sports: golf, rowing, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.
Selected for the 2009-10 spring award were Kaui Tom (Softball, ECU), Charlissa Foster (Women's Track and Field, Houston), Michaela Kissell (Women's Tennis, Marshall), Steffen Nerdal (Men's Track and Field, Memphis), Brittany Washington (Women's Track and Field, Rice), Catherine Campbell (SMU, Rowing), Kelly Rooney (Women's Track and Field, Southern Miss), Nicolette Taku (Women's Track and Field, Tulane), Susan Stangl (Rowing, Tulsa), Mandy Lowman (Softball, UAB), Abby McClain (Softball, UCF) and Stacie Townsend (Softball, UTEP).
Washington has volunteered at Texas Children's Hospital, DePelchin Children's Center, Houston Food Bank and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Those experiences correlate to her summer internships with Deloitte, where the focus on talent delivery has sparked an interest within Washington for campus recruitment.
The psychology student will set sail for Rome, where she will study abroad the coming fall semester. In the meantime, the Houston native is spending a second summer interning with Deloitte, further sharpening her skills in talent acquisition and delivery.
