June 10, 2013
Sophomore Claire Uke was named an honorable mention All-American by the USTFCCCA, the organization announced Monday. This season, she had Rice's highest national finish in the shot put since 1989.
Claire Uke threw her outdoor-best, 54 feet, 1.25 inches to become the first Rice shot put athlete to qualify for the final round of nationals since 1989, and finished in 18th place in the nation. She finished fifth among sophomores nationally in the event, and was the first sophomore to compete in the shot put at the final round of nationals for the Owls since six-time National Champion Regina Cavanaugh did so in 1985.
Uke registered a second-place finish in the shot put at the C-USA Championships, and finished fourth in the discus. She had four event wins in the shot put in the outdoor season.
