EUGENE, OR – Four Owls will be representing Rice track and field this week as they travel to Eugene, Oregon for the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 8-11 at historic Hayward Field.
Rice men’s senior javelin thrower Evan Karakolis enters the meet as the highest-seeded Owl with a sixth-place mark of 71.70m (235’3”) from the NCAA West Prelims two weeks ago in Lawrence. The Ontario native will be making his second career appearance in Eugene, having earned First-Team All-American honors in 2014 when he placed seventh overall. Karakolis holds the third-best mark in the nation this season with his school record throw of 79.30m (260’2”) set at the Kansas Relays.
Senior thrower Claire Uke represents the highest-seeded Owl on the women’s side, entering the meet ranked 11th (16.90m) in the shot put. Uke, from Cedar Hill, Texas, placed sixth overall in the shot put two weeks ago at the NCAA West Prelims. She’ll be making her third overall appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, having earned Second-Team All-American honors in 2014 and honorable mention in 2013.
Also returning to Eugene will be junior triple jumper Daisy Ding, who placed eighth in the event at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships to garner First-Team All-American honors. The Sydney, Australia native is seeded 18th (13.02m) this season after finishing sixth overall at the NCAA West Prelims.
Rounding out the competition for the Owls is sophomore hammer thrower Austin Riddle, who will be making his first career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Riddle, from Houston, is seeded 19th (64.15m) after his school record breaking performance at the NCAA West Prelims.
Wednesday’s action will be televised on ESPN2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. (CT) while Thursday’s action will be carried on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m. (CT) and ESPN at 7 p.m. (CT). Coverage on Saturday will be televised on ESPN beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
