One of the most decorated Rice athletes of all-time, Marissa Daniels, from Pearland, Texas, has garnered yet another award. Daniels was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VI women's track & field/cross country team. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects the team for each district. Daniels is now eligible for Academic All-American status.
A senior, Daniels has a cumulative 3.86 grade point average with a major in kinesiology. She has designs on attending medical school.
Last year, Daniels was named Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA. Her other academic accolades include: 2007 and 2008 C-USA Academic Medal Recipient; Fall 2005, Spring 2006, Fall 2006, Fall 2007 Rice University President's Honor Roll; 2005 and 2006 Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-American; 2006 and 2007 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team; 2007 and 2008 C-USA All-Academic Team; 2007 C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year - women's cross country; 3-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll; 2007 and 2008 Rice University Scholar Athlete for Women's Track & Field; 2008 "R" Association Postgraduate Scholarship.
This past year on the track, Daniels won the 10,000m (36:22.93) and placed second in the 5000m (17:12.79) at the 2008 C-USA Outdoor Championship and she will run in the 10,000m at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. She also placed fourth at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the 3000m and placed seventh in the 5000m.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for her career. No athlete is eligible until she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
