Shakera Reece will be the lone representative of the Rice women's track and field team to compete in the 2010 NCAA Track & Field Championships in two weeks after the Owls were shut out on the final night of competition.
"We didn't have our best day today, but we competed hard" Rice head coach Jim Bevan said.
"(Britany) has come so far during her career at Rice. She leaves here as our school record holder in the 5,000 and while we will miss her leadership, she's provided an example to all our younger runners of what can happen when you stay dedicated."
"The pace tonight was hard and fast, but it's important to remember that Heather was one of only two freshmen to make the final 24. She dropped her best time by 13 seconds this year and has had a great year," Bevan noted.
Junior Sarah Agara, competing in her second NCAA regional, finished 41st in the triple jump with a mark of 11.71m /38-05.00.
Senior Britany Williams, running her final race on the track for Rice, and junior Allison Pye failed to qualify in the 5,000 meters. Williams, the school record-holder, finished 28th in 17:23.99 while Pye was 33rd in 17:29.89.
"We were thrilled that Allison made the Regional after coming back from her injuries, so the race was a bonus to close out her year," Bevan noted. "Britany just did not have it tonight, but she has come so far during her career at Rice. She leaves here as our school record holder in the 5,000 and while we will miss her leadership, she's provided an example to all our younger runners of what can happen when you stay dedicated," he stated.
Reece will compete in the 100 meters at the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon from June 9-12.
