Women's Track & Field Competes at NCAA Midwest Regional

The Rice Owls women's track and field team will send 11 athletes to Norman, Oklahoma, for the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional. Action takes place at the University of Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track and Field Complex May 29-30, 2009. Live results can be accessed through www.deltatiming.com.

Competing for Rice are Shakera Reece (100m, 200m), Luci Cincinatis (100m hurdles), Ariana Ince (pole vault), Sarah Agara (triple jump), Shannon Moran (long jump), Callie Wells (5000m), Britany Williams (5000m), Allison Pye (5000m), Lennie Waite (3000m steeplechase), Nicole Mericle (3000m steeplechase), and Becky Wade (3000m steeplechase).

Waite, the school record-holder in the 3000m steeplechase (10:00.30) ranks seventh in the nation, while Mericle's top 2009 time of 10:07.13 ranks 10th.

A year ago at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Nebraska, the Owls placed ninth with 30 points. Desarie Walwyn placed eighth in the 100m (11.77) and in the 400m, Sarah Lyons placed fourth by tying her season best mark with a time of 53.11. Chandra Ewing earned a seventh place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.87. In the 1500m, Callie Wells placed eighth with a time of 4:24.39.

 

 

In the 3000m steeplechase, Mericle placed fifth with a then school record time of 10:15.67. Wade finished 14th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time 10:32.93.

Rice's 4x100m relay squad (Sarah Lyons, Shakera Reece, Brittany Washington, and Desarie Walwyn) ran a season best time of 44.85 to place fifth. Also, the Owls' 4x400m (Walwyn, Washington, Ewing, and Lyons) placed sixth with a time of 3:37.19.
