Houston -- A total of 10 Rice women's track and field athletes will compete at the NCAA West Region in Austin, Texas, May 27-29 at Texas' Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium.
Senior sprinter Shakera Reece will compete in the 100m and the 200m events. Reece enters with the eighth-fastest 100m time in the West at 11.47 and the 15th-best 200m time (23.63).
Rice has two runners in the 800m in Vicki Walker and Keltie John. Walker enters with the 38th-best time (2:09.06), while John is at 47 (2:09.71). Heather Olson will run the 1500m and she has the 39th-best time at 4:25.93.
In the 5000m, senior Britany Williams enters with the 16th-best time at 16:11.34, while Allison Pye is 38th (16:46.76). Halsey Fowler will run the 3000m steeplechase and she sports the 33rd-best time of 10:37.25. Kimberly Stanford will compete in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 13.85 ranks 44th-best in the West Region.
The Owls have two athletes competing in field events. Ariana Ince will be in the pole vault, while Sarah Agara competes in the triple jump. Ince has a 2010 best-height of 3.95m/12-11.75 (36th) and Agara has a 2010 best mark of 12.36m/40-6.75, which is ranked 40th. Ince won the 2010 Conference USA Outdoor title with a mark of 3.87m/12-8.25.
The top 48 entries for each event, besides the heptathlon, compete at either the West Region or the East Region Greensboro, N.C.). The top 12 finishers from each region then advance to the NCAA Championship (June 9-12, 2010) in Eugene, Ore., at host Oregon's Hayward Field.
