Houston - Six individuals will represent Rice at the NCAA West Preliminary Round hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field on Thursday, May 26 - Saturday, May 28, 2011. Forty-eight athletes are entered for each event and 24 teams for each relay was well.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship is slated for June 7-12 in Des Moines, Iowa. The top 12 from the East and West advance to the NCAA Championship.
Participating from the South Main Street institution are Heather Olson in the steeplechase. Olson ran 10:37.86 in her only steeplechase race this outdoor season to place third at the Conference USA championship. Ariana Ince will compete in the pole vault (4.06m/13-3.75) and in the javelin (48-12m/157-10). Junior Cleona Oliver joins Ince in the pole vault competition. Oliver enters with a best mark of 3.96m/12-11.75. Senior Sarah Agara is in the triple jump field with a mark of 12.59m/41-3.75 and senior Nicole Mericle competes in the 5000m (16:37.37). Sophomore Sharae Robinson will be in the discus event. Robinson has a season-best mark of 48.66m/159-8.
"Our young ladies are going to Eugene on a roll and with a lot of momentum," comments head coach Jim Bevan. "Ari (Ince) has had a great year and is getting better. Eugene is a nice place for a track and field and it should be an exciting weekend for our athletes."
