LOS ANGELES - The Rice Owls men's and women's track and field teams had a select number of athletes competing at Saturday's Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif.
On the men's side, sophomore middle distance runner Reagan Olguin placed fourth collegiately in the 800m with a mark of 1:51.29. Later in the evening, senior Marco Ruiz moved into fifth place on the Conference USA 3000m steeplechase standings with a Rice season-best mark of 9:03.70, finishing eighth among collegiate competitors.
Senior William Roberts climbed into the Top 10 in C-USA in the 1500m with a season-best time of 3:49.63, placing 12th overall, while freshman Matthew Murray set a season-best mark of 3:51.96 to finish 15th in the same event.
Senior Cali Roper led the women with a Rice season-best time of 16:30.82 in the 5000m, finishing third among collegiate competitors. Abigail Cartwright (17:03.34) and Khayla Patel (17:11.30) also competed in the race and finished 24th and 27th, respectively.
Senior Hannah Kay set a season-best in the 1500m (4:42.08). Former Rice All-American and current volunteer coach Lennie Waite won the 3000m steeplechase in a dazzling time of 10:05.07
The men and women will next set their eyes on the C-USA Outdoor Championships, which will take place May 11-14 in El Paso, Texas.
