Rice University distance runner Lennie Waite has been selected by Conference USA as its female Track and Field Athlete of the Week. Waite, a senior from Austin, Texas, had a stellar performance last weekend at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. The senior clocked two NCAA Regional qualifying times that currently rank in the NCAA Top 5 in 2009 performances. She also established a pair of school records over the weekend.
In the 1500m, Waite placed sixth with the nation's third-best time of 4:16.09. That performance also registers as a Rice school record. She also improved her own Owl record in the 3000m steeplechase with a third-place time of 10:00.30, which ranks fourth in the nation and is 12.01 seconds faster than her previous personal best. This is Waite's first Track and Field Athlete of the Week honor for the outdoor season
