April 5, 2008

Rice senior Rachel Greff broke her own school record with a vault of 4.20 meters (13-9 ¼) to finish as the top collegian and highlight the efforts of the Rice women's track and field team at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, held at the Mike Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Greff bested her previous school record of 4.12 meters (13-6 ¼) on her first attempt at the height. She finished second overall to Chelsa Johnson of Nike, who cleared 4.45 meters (14-7 ¼). Greff's vault is also Olympic Trials "B" standard.

The Owls closed out their 2008 Texas Relays in style as the 4x400 relay team of Desarie Walwyn, Brittany Washington, Chandra Ewing and Sarah Lyons finished sixth in a time regional-qualifying time of 3:37.68, which ranks as the Owls fastest clocking in the event since 2005.

Becky Wade posted the Owls other top effort when she finished second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase on Friday, qualifying for regionals with a personal-best clocking of 10:42.17. Walker's time ranks as the second-fastest in Rice history, surpassing Shannon Murto's 10:43.59 effort in 2004. Sarah Yoder holds the school record with a time of 10:31.57 in 2006.
