Colwick and Waite Honored By C-USA Coaches

Rice's Jason Colwick and Lennie Waite have been honored by the coaches of Conference USA for their stellar indoor track and field seasons.

Colwick, who became the first C-USA athlete to capture a NCAA Indoor individual title while winning the pole vault last weekend, has been named Conference USA's Male Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season, while Waite, who earned All-American honors in the mile, has been named the league's Female Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor campaign.

Dione Thomas of UCF was selected as the Female Field Athlete of the Year, while Mark Davidson of Tulsa earned the Male Track Athlete of the Year honor in voting done by the head track coaches.

Colwick captured the league's first indoor NCAA gold medal after vaulting 5.60m/18-4.50. Earlier in the year, he became the first vaulter in league history to top 18 feet indoors, including a school-record vault of 5.61m/16-5.75 at the Texas A&M Invitational.

Waite lead the Owls to their third consecutive conference indoor title while earning high point honors at the meet. She won two individual gold medals in the mile and 3000 meters, plus a third while anchoring the distance medley relay and added a bronze in the 800 meters. She smashed her school record in the mile in the finals of the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing in sixth place with a time of. 4:38.60
