HOUSTON - Rice sophomore thrower Austin Riddle picked up where he left off in the indoor season with a pair of victories at Friday's TSU Relays.
The Houston native established a new Rice outdoor record in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 62.64m, surpassing Duncan Dickerson's mark (62.21m) set last season. Riddle also secured first place in the discus to complete a solid day with his first two collegiate victories.
Other highlights on the men's side on day one of competition included a third place finish (collegiately) in the hammer throw by sophomore Uche Ugwunze, recording a throw of 53.99m. Senior Chris Sanders also placed sixth (6.63m) in the long jump.
On the women's side the Owls received a victory in the hammer throw from junior Dreu Dixson. The Dallas native won her first collegiate event with a personal best heave of 50.19m, while teammate Ijeoma Ugwunze placed third in the same event with a throw of 42.08m.
Meanwhile freshman Akuira Young placed second (1:03.32) in the 400m hurdles in her first collegiate outdoor action. Junior Eboni Sutherland also qualified for the finals of the 100m dash with a sixth-place time of 12.45.
