Rice senior Lennie Waite continued her successful senior season by qualifying in a pair of individual events at the NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. The final list of qualifiers was released by the NCAA on Monday night.
Waite is seeded 10th with her school-record time of 4:39.36 in the mile while she is ranked 14th in the 3000 meters with a clocking of 9:16.90. While a number of former Owls earned berths at the women's championships in both individual and relay events,
The multiple berths at the NCAA Championships cap a remarkable final season for the senior for Austin who originally came to Rice on a soccer scholarship. She was named the high point performer for the women at the C-USA Indoor Championships at the end of February after winning three gold medals and a bronze while leading Rice to its third consecutive team title.
The 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held this Friday and Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center on the campus of Texas A&M University. General Admission tickets to the NCAA Indoor remain on sale for $25 .
Waite and Rice pole vaulter Jason Colwick will both be in action late on Friday afternoon.
The heats of the women's mile are slated to start at 4:00 p.m. while the men's pole vault finals begin at 4:30. Fans can watch the meet live on ESPN360.com. The finals for the mile will be run at 5:00 on Saturday, while the 3,000 meter event will start at 6:40.
ESPN2 will air a 90-minute wrap-up show on the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. (central).
