Waite Breaks Rice Mile Record

March 7, 2009

Rice senior Lennie Waite completed her quest for the Rice school record in the mile, while freshman Keltie John came close to adding a second school record to the Owls efforts at the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center on the campus of Notre Dame University.

Waite finished fifth in the mile in a time of 4:39.86 to break the Rice school mark of 4:40. 86 set by Pam Klassen in 1988. Her time improved upon her previous provisional mark of 4:41.69 at the Texas A&M Invitational and ranks 20th in the nation.

The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held next weekend in College Station.

John finished fifth in the 800 meters in a personal-record 2:07.54, which lowered her previous personal best by nearly three seconds ( 2:10.26 at the Texas A&M Invitational ) and just off the Rice school mark of 2:06.11 set by Aimee Teteris in 2002. Her effort ranks 29th in the country. Fellow freshman Sophie Peters finished 16th in the same event on (2:11.78). Brittany Washington rounded out the Owls efforts on the day, finishing 12th in the 400m in 55.36.
