Uke, Roper Garner C-USA Performers of the Meet Honors
March 6, 2015
IRVING, Texas - Rice's Claire Uke and Cali Roper were named Conference USA Female Field Performer and Track Performer of the Meet, respectively, the league announced on Friday.
The athletes were chosen in voting done by C-USA track and field coaches earlier this week, based on their performances at the C-USA Indoor Championships. Uke and Roper are the first Owl athletes to earn C-USA Indoor Performances of the Meet honors since 2007.
Uke, a senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, won the shot put while breaking Regina Cavanaugh's 29-year-old school record with a throw of 17.95m (58-10.75) to win gold. The victory was Uke's third consecutive C-USA indoor title and she currently sits third in the nation with her throw.
Roper, a sophomore from Conroe, Texas, won her first career C-USA Indoor title by blowing away the competition in the 5000m, finishing in a time of 16:14.78 Roper lapped all but one competitor in the race and finished a full 30 seconds ahead of second place. She recorded the second-fastest time in Rice history behind only Becky Wade's 16:03.13 set in 2012.
Both Uke and Roper will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Ark.
