While the Rice men's and women's track teams spent the weekend honing their preparations for this weekend's Conference USA Indoor Championships, several former Owls had successful results in weekend competitions.
Leading the way was Funmi Jimoh, who finished third in the long jump at the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston. Jimoh, who earned All American honors in the long jump last year for the Owls, took the lead in the event when she jumped 6.33 meters (20' 9 1/4") on her third attempt. She held the lead until the fifth round, when Hyleas Fountain of the Nike Track Club jumped 6.38 meters. Shameka Marshall of Shore Athletic Club matched that mark on her sixth and final jump, to edge out Jimoh for the final spot on the US team that will compete at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 7-9 in Valencia, Spain.
In Dallas, former Rice distance runner Dr. Riva (Rahl) Graeme (1991-94) won her third career Cowtown Marathon while Keith Pierce, who ran for Rice from 1999-2003 captured his second straight men's title.
One week earlier, Sean Wade who lettered in 1989, captured the masters division title in the USA Cross Country Championships in San Diego
