HOUSTON, Texas- The Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships are set to take place on Thursdayat the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The meet, which will take place at the same venue for a fourth consecutive season, was scheduled to begin Wednesday but has been pushed back to Thursday due to inclement weather.
The Owls will boast a strong field contingent led by senior thrower Claire Uke, who is ranked sixth in the nation in the shot put with a career-best throw of 16.97m (55-8.25) set earlier this season at the Leonard Hilton Memorial. Uke has won four consecutive shot put events and is undefeated in 2015, while earning three C-USA Indoor Female Athlete of the Week awards. Uke will be joined in the shot put by sophomore thrower Ijeoma Ugwunze, who ranks third (14.72m) in the league.
Senior vaulter Marielle Brisbois has had a stellar comeback season and has the top vault (4.10m, 13-5.25) amongst C-USA competitors this season while senior Alicia Janke ranks fourth (3.70m). Also competing in the pole vault is junior McKenzie Johnson, who is returning from a stress fracture and placed second at last year's C-USA Indoor Championships. Other athletes to watch for in the jumps will be junior Belle MacFarlane, who is also returning from an injury and will be looking to repeat as the C-USA Indoor champion in the high jump. Sophomore Daisy Ding is also ranked amongst the top of the league in the triple jump (12.43m).
Sophomore Cali Roper leads the Owls in the distance events and will be competing in the 5000m, 3000m, Mile and DMR. Roper was the C-USA cross country champion and is the league-leader in the mile with a conference-best mark of 4:55.09.
Admission prices are as follows: a two-day pass is $20 for adults and $10 for youth (12-17); while a single-day ticket is $15 per day for adults and $6 for youth (12-17). Admission is free for children age 11 and under and for students with a valid ID card who attends a C-USA member institution.
