Rice's women's track team competes in the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Ala. this weekend at the CrossPlex facility.
"We're hoping for a lot of improvements, a lot of seasonal bests at this meet," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We have a young team, a lot of freshmen ... it'll be the first conference meet for about seven freshmen."
Freshman vaulter McKenzie Johnson ranks second in Conference USA with a mark of 3.98 m, which is the highest any freshman vaulter has cleared at Rice. She ranks 43rd in the nation in the vault, and was the highest-ranking collegian in two meets this season.
Claire Uke ranks third in C-USA in the shot put, after throwing 15.00 m at Texas A&M on Feb. 9. She ranks 79th in the nation entering the meet.
The Owls enter the meet ranked eighth in the USTFCCA's South Central Region rankings.
Rice hosts the outdoor version of the C-USA Championship, from May 9 to 12.
