Senior Lennie Waite and freshman Keltie John continued their winning ways to highlight the efforts of the Rice women at the Texas A&M Invitational that concluded on Saturday at the Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium in College Station.
Waite lowered her personal best in the mile while winning the event in 4:41.69 and John lowered her personal record while winning the 800 meters in 1:50.26 to give the Owls a pair of individual champions on Saturday. Waite finished second to John in a season-best 2:11.04.
Thanks to the wins by Waite, John and Allison Pye (who took the 5,000 on Friday night), the Owls finished fifth out of 21 teams at the Invitational with a total of 55 points. Texas captured the team title with 110.5, followed by Texas A&M (87), Baylor (79), Miami (57.5) and the Owls. Rounding out the top 10 were defending NCAA Champion Arizona State (50), Texas Tech (49). TCU (42), UTEP (24) and Texas-Pan American (18).
The Owls will now set their sites on defending their back-to-back C-USA Indoor team titles. The 2009 C-USA Championships will be held at the Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston on February 27-28.
