Claire Uke threw 51 feet 3¾ inches on her second throw, earning her an 18th-place finish, the highest for a Rice women's track athlete since 1989 in the shot put, in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Eugene, Ore.

Uke's throw ranked fifth among sophomores at the event, which bodes well for the Owls moving forward. She was the first Rice athlete to compete in the shot put at the highest collegiate level since Wendi Miller in 1989--in a discipline that has seen Rice win six NCAA Championships, indoor and outdoor, all by Regina Cavanaugh. Uke was the first sophomore to compete at the NCAA Championship round for Rice since Cavanaugh did so as a redshirt sophomore in 1985.

Uke finished second in the C-USA Championships in May, and qualified for the final round of NCAA competition by throwing 54 feet, 1.25 inches.
