FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Rice sophomore high jumper Belle MacFarlane recorded a career-best height of 1.77m (5-9.75) Saturday to place fifth at the NCAA West Preliminary Round and in the process became the fourth Owl this weekend to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in two weeks.
MacFarlane, from Dallas, Texas, was seeded tied for 41st in the nation entering competition on Saturday. She recorded her PR on her second jump of the third flight, topping her previous best mark of 1.75m set earlier this season at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
“Belle was awesome and performed her best under pressure,” Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. “She was seeded 41st and came out fifth. She boomed her second attempts clearance by a big margin and punched her ticket to Eugene. She’s so deserving, and I couldn’t be more excited about this weekend and to see her perform on a national stage in a couple weeks.”
MacFarlane will now join Claire Uke (hammer), Cali Roper (10,000m) and McKenzie Johnson (pole vault) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 11-14 in Eugene. The four qualifying athletes are all underclassmen, marking the first time Rice has sent four athletes to the NCAA Championships since 2009.
