May 30, 2014
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas - Rice junior thrower almost punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships twice in as many days but fell just outside the top 12 in the discus, placing 14th on the second day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
Uke recorded a throw of 51.70m (169-00) and fell just short of 12th place finisher, Kiah Hicks (52.68m) of Colorado State.
Rice was also represented by freshman Daisy Ding, who finished 20th in the triple jump with a distance of 12.44m (40-9.75). Senior Heather Olson also saw her Rice career come to a close by placing 23rd in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:27.55.
"I'm real proud of our ladies," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "Claire came so close to moving on and improved on her seeding, Daisy got some good experience for a freshman and Heather ran her heart out, actually moving into second in the last lap and then pushing her body despite being sick with a respiratory virus. I'm proud of our only senior here, our Watson Fellowship Winner."
The Owls will still have one more athlete set to compete tomorrow in sophomore jumper Belle MacFarlane, who will start at 6 p.m.
