NCAA West Prelims Results
LAWRENCE, KS - Rice senior thrower Claire Uke will enter Saturday in second place in the women's discus at the NCAA West Prelims following a throw of 52.88m (173-6) late Friday evening.
Uke, from Cedar Hill, Texas, will have to wait until Saturday morning to see if her mark will be good enough to advance after inclement weather pushed back the third flight. Competition is scheduled to restart at 9:30 a.m.
Seniors Belle MacFarlane (high jump) and McKenzie Johnson (pole vault) each competed in their final meet as an Owl with superb careers. MacFarlane finished tied for 14th clearing 1.76m (5-9.25) while Johnson placed 28th (3.97m).
Junior distance runner Cali Roper led for 10 laps of the 10,000m before finishing before finishing 24th in a time of 35:30.04. Roper ends a stellar outdoor season in which she swept the 5,000m and 10,000m at the C-USA Championships.
Freshman Bryanah Rideaux also made her NCAA West Prelims debut with a time of 56.00 in the 400m, finishing 40th.
"Today was a tough day with very good competition," Rice women's T&F head coach Jim Bevan said. "Bryanah got some good experience as a freshman in the 400m. Belle and McKenzie went out at heights that would have been new personal bests and Cali led for over 5k of her race but ran out of gas. Claire had a great toss and may make it, but we won't find out until tomorrow."
Uke (shot put, 12:30 p.m.) will be one of four Owls on Saturday who will be looking to earn NCAA Outdoor National Championship berths. Sophomore Elsa Racasan will race in the 1500m (10:30 a.m.) while juniors Daisy Ding and Cybil Obiozor will both be competing in the triple jump (12:30 p.m.).
