Owls Dominate to Win Conference USA Championship

El Paso, Texas -- The Rice Owls track and field team continued its dominance in winning its second straight Conference USA outdoor team title with a school record 175 points. UTEP was second with 143.5 points, while UCF finished third with 84.33 points.

Not only was it Rice's second straight outdoor championship, but it also was the school's sixth conference title in the last nine years. The Owls won the WAC title in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004.

The Owls have now won the last five C-USA championships. In addition to the 2008 outdoor title, Rice has won the following team titles: 2007 indoor title, the 2007 outdoor championship, the 2007 cross country title, and the 2008 indoor crown.

Rice head coach Jim Bevan was again named Conference USA Coach of the Year for the second straight time.

"We had a tremendous day with tremendous performances across the board," said Jim Bevan. "It was a true battle and we had an outstanding meet and to do it at a high altitude makes it even more outstanding."

Sara Lyons won the 400m title with a time of 53.11. In the 100m, Shakera Reece (11.46) and Desarie Walwyn (11.50) placed second and third.

Rice had three Owls in the top five of the 200m. Sarah Lyons led the trio with second place time of 23.37, while Shakera Reece (23.90) was fourth and Desarie Walwyn (23.99) finished fifth.



The Owls placed three in the 1500m with Callie Wells (4:34.38) and Nicole Mericle (4:37.81) placing second and third respectively. Also Britany Williams placed eighth at 4:43.86.

Chandra Ewing was third in the 400m hurdles at 1:00.73.

In triple jump action, Sara Agara placed fourth with a mark of 12.80m/42-00.00 and Jenny Glover finished eighth (12.42m/40-9).

Rice dominated the 5000m by placing second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth to rack up 26 points and the team title. Marissa Daniels was second (17:12.79), Callie Wells third (17:13.79), Nicole Mericle fourth (17:16.99), Allison Pye was fifth (17:18.950, and Becky Wade placed sixth (17:24.66).

The 4x100m relay team comprised of Sarah Lyons, Shakera Reece, Brittany Washington, and Desarie Walwyn finished third at 45.34.

Rice's 4x400m team of Desarie Walwyn, Brittany Washington, Chandra Ewing, Sarah Lyons won the event in 3:39.07 to place an exclamation point on the Owls championship.
