Orlando -- The Rice Owls women's track and field team sits in second place with 39 points heading into Sunday's final day of action at the Conference USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship, held at UCF's Track and Soccer Complex. SMU leads the 12-team field with 50 points.
"Overall, I thought we performed pretty good today," commented Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "On Sunday, though, we have to be nails as this is a great five-way battle for the team championship. We need to rise to the occasion."
The Rice Owls went 1-2 in the pole vault to tally 18 points. Ariana Ince cleared a winning mark of 3.87m/12-8.25, while Cleona Oliver placed second at 3.77m/12-4.5. For Ince, it was her second C-USA pole vault crown, as she also won the 2010 C-USA Indoor crown. Kade Devine was 11th and Casie Wilson 12th both at 3.17m/10-4.75.
"Ari (Ince) and Cleona (Oliver) were great under adverse wind conditions," said Bevan.
In the women's discus, freshman Sharae Robinson tallied three points for Rice with a sixth-place finish and season-best mark of 43.86/143-11. Placing 10th was Tina Robinson (39.12m/128-4) and Brittany Brown was 12th (37.70m/123-8).
The Owls had four 1500m runners advanced to Sunday's final. Sophomore Keltie John was third (4:32.07), fourth was freshman Heather Olson (4:32.83), fifth was senior Britany Williams (4:32.82), and seventh was Halsey Fowler at 4:33.46.
Kimberly Stanford advanced in the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 13.91.
After attending graduation ceremonies on campus, senior Shakera Reece made it to Orlando 45 minutes prior to her 100m heat and ran a season-best 11.47 to qualify for Sunday's final. She also qualified third in the 200m with a personal-best time of 23.63.
