Rice Women's Track & Field In Second Place at C-USA Outdoor Championship

Tulsa, Okla. - Rice dominated the 3000m steeplechase placing first, second, third and is now in second place heading to Saturday's final events at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field meet at Hurricane Stadium on the University of Tulsa campus. Lennie Waite, Becky Wade, and Nicole Mericle all surpassed the previous stadium record in sweeping the podium. Waite was first in 10:13.92, with Wade following with a season-best 10:19.81, and Mericle was third (10:21.39). The previous stadium record was 10:30.89 set by Fresno State's Andrea Buckner in 2005. The trio tallied 24 points for Rice and the Owls, after two days of competition, have scored 40 points to first place SMU's 41.

Shannon Moran contributed one point to the Rice cause with an eighth place finish in the long jump. Moran produced a season-best 6.02m/19-9 effort.

Qualifying for Saturday's finals were Shakera Reece in the 100m and 200m, Brittany Washington in the 400m, Sophie Peeters and Vicki Walker in the 800m, and Luci Cincinatis in the 100m hurdles. For the 1500m final on Saturday, Rice qualified five runners. Lennie Waite (4:37.53), Nicole Mericle (4:38.27), Callie Wells (4:38.60), and Britany Williams (4:38.76) had the top four preliminary times, while freshman Marie Thompson was 10th (4:43.91).
