Claire Uke claimed All-Conference USA Honors in the shot put, to lead the Owls in the final day of the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The Owls earned more points in the meet than in 2012, despite major losses to graduation, to finish eighth in the meet.
"We performed as we usually do, better than we should on a sheet of paper," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "For a young team, we scored more points than we did last year, and that makes you feel good."
Uke threw 53 feet, 0.75 inches (16.17 m) to finish second in the event and set an outdoor personal best. She is All-C-USA in the shot put for the second time this year, after winning the competition at the C-USA Indoor Meet.
Uke joins Sharae Robinson, who won the discus throw on Saturday, and McKenzie Johnson, who finished third in the pole vault on Saturday, as All-C-USA performers.
Rice's relay squad of McCoy, Precious Knighton, Nwora, and Imani Mark finished 5th in the 4x400 m relay with a time of 3:40.84, the fastest 4x400 mark for Rice in four seasons.
Rice had two athletes score in the 1500 meter race, with Allie Schaich and Heather Olson both running 4:34 to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.
Lilian Nwora ran a 2:12.27 to finish sixth in the 800 m race.
Tyneshia McCoy ran a personal best 54.47 to finish sixth in the 400 m dash.
