Sharae Robinson threw 53.68 meters to win the C-USA Championship in the discus for the second straight year, and help Rice's women's track team to a third place standing in the 2013 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Robinson, who participated in commencement earlier in the day, took home the discus championship by throwing a career-best 53.68 m, a throw that ranks 23rd-best in the nation. Claire Uke finished fourth in the same event with a throw of 48.30 m. Uke is expected to compete again Sunday in the shot put.
McKenzie Johnson cleared 3.92 meters to finish third in C-USA, and the leading vaulter among C-USA freshmen.
Halsey Fowler, Heather Olsen and Lindsay Miller all scored for the Owls in the steeplechase, led by Fowler's 10:47.93 fifth place finish.
In prelim action, Lilian Nwora ran 2:11.27 to qualify for the finals of the 800 m race and Tyneshia McCoy runs 54.67 to qualify for the finals of the 400 m dash. Keltie John, Allie Schaich and Heather Olson all ran 4:41 in the 1500 m race to qualify for Sunday's final.
