New Orleans - Freshman Claire Uke led Rice with a fourth place finish in the shot put on the second day of competition at the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship held Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Uke, from Cedar Hill, Texas, posted a fourth-place mark of 14.53m/47-8.
Said Beven about the 1500m duo, "Allie Schaich ran a smart race for a freshman, staying connected to the lead group and running a qualifying time. Sarah Mason followed behind and outkicked a UCF girl for the last spot."
They both are running in their first C-USA final on Sunday.
Lilian Nwora earned a spot in the 800m final with a prelim time of 2:13.08.
"Lilian Nwora was seeded 15th, but ran the race of her life and a big personal best in chasing down a UCF runner at the line by four-thousandths of a second and third place in the heat," commented Bevan.
"In the 3000m steeplechase final event, Halsey Fowler and Johanna Ohm, who hadn't run a steeplechase in two years, both did exceedingly well, with Halsey finishing seventh and Johanna 10th," said Bevan. "I was extremely proud of both of these young ladies as it is a very challenging race and Jo got a PB and Halsey scored. Overall, we had a better second day than we were seeded and I thought we competed very well."
The Owls are tied for fourth with UCF as each have 26 points after six events heading into Sunday's competition
