New Orleans - Senior distance runner Becky Wade won her fourth career individual title when she captured Friday's 10,000-meter run at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Wade covered the distance in a time of 34:54.57, ahead of second-place Kathya Garcia (UTEP) at 35:25.52. This is the Dallas native's second 10,000m victory as she also won the 2009 C-USA title. Wade's other two C-USA wins came in the 2012 and 2010 C-USA Indoor mile.
"It was a fun last Conference USA 10K and it went exactly as I had hoped," beamed Wade. "I took it out hard and was able to relax after the two-mile mark. Props to Allison Pye and Farrah Madanay who ran tough races as well."
"She carried out our race plan perfectly," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "She took the lead early and forced the pace until she had a gap from the field. Becky is in great shape and has worked hard for this title. Allison followed way back and was in seventh place for the first 5000 meters and then moved up and up and raced very hard for the second half."
Allison Pye ran fifth for Rice with a time of 36:09.67 to score four points for the Owl cause. Wade and Pye will also run in Sunday's 5000m-meter final.
In the hammer throw, Sharae Robinson tallied five points for Rice with a fourth-place mark of 49.65m/162-11.
"Sharae Robinson improved from 10th last year to 4th and she did a great job with minor improvements in her technique and lots of hard work and sacrifice," commented Bevan. "She continues to impress and Nancy Wenzel has done a great job teaching her the event from scratch."
After two events, the Owls have scored 19 points to lead the 12-team field. SMU follows with 11 points.
Live video streaming of the championships will be available on Saturday on all 12-member institutions' All-Access players as well as the C-USA All-Access player beginning at 5 p.m. CT. A subscription is required to view the C-USA Live Streaming on Saturday. Fox Sports Network is set to televise Sunday's final events on tape delay.
An all-sessions ticket is available for $15.00 for adult and $10.00 for youth that is good for all three days of the championship. Single day tickets are $10.00 for adult and $5.00 for youth. Also, current students from each of the 12 schools in Conference USA will be admitted for free with valid school identification.
