Huntsville, Texas - Rice Owl pole vaulter Cleona Oliver set a new personal record in winning the event at Sam Houston State's Bearkat Twilight Thursday evening.
Oliver, a senior from San Antonio, vaulted 3.98m/13-0.75 for the win. Her teammate Marielle Brisbois placed third with a height of 3.68m/12-0.75.
"Cleona Oliver became the fifth Owl to vault 13-feet with her victory today," stated Owl head coach Jim Bevan. "I'm very proud of her, it has been a long time coming. This mark should get her to nationals, but there's more there for conference next week."
Sharae Robinson was a double-winner as she captured the discus and hammer throw events. Robinson won the discus with a mark of 48.34m/158-7 and the hammer throw with a distance of 51.31m/168-4. Olivia Williams was second in the discus 42.71m/140-1, fourth in the shot put (12.42m/40-9), and fifth in the hammer throw (32.75m/107-5).
In the 1500m, Becky Wade was second with a time of 4:27.92, while Allison Pye was third (4:33.45). Lilian Nwora was fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:16.59. Bridget Ugoh was sixth in the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 15.68.
Kiri Kendall won the high jump (1.60m/5-3)in a jump-off alternating between the long jump and the high jump events. Kendall placed third in the long jump (5.53m/18-1.75)
According to Bevan, the Bearkat Twilight was a perfect meet to compete in after the grueling final exam period.
"Our ladies are starting to recover from finals and that's a good sign going into conference," commented Bevan. "This meet was what we needed to jump start us after the final exam period."
