The Rice Owls women's track team produced three more NCAA qualifiers and while Becky Wade broke a school record in action at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight Meet Thursday at the Rice Track Stadium.
With the three additions on Thursday, the Owls have 14 NCAA qualifiers which equals the school's all-time high, which certainly pleases head coach Jim Bevan. "It's a great accomplishment to have 14 qualifiers, but I also believe that there's a strong chance for us to get couple more qualified before the end of the season," said Bevan. "It was a tough time for the team in handling the last week of classes, but the kids competed strong and improved in their marks and times."
The Owls qualified two more triple jumpers on Thursday. Eunique Hamilton won the event with a leap of 41-03.25 (12.58m) while Sara Agara placed second in with an NCAA qualifying mark of 40-11.00 (12.47m). Jenny Glover had qualifed for the triple jump earlier this season. Hamilton also won the high jump (1.70m).
Chandra Ewing qualified for the regional with a second place time of 1:00.78 in the 400m hurdles.
But the highlight of the meet was freshman Becky Wade breaking Sara Yoder's two-year old 3000m steeplechase record (10:31.57) with a second place time of 10:29.23.
