HOUSTON – Rice redshirt freshman Hannah Jackson established a new Rice record in the 200m dash to highlight an all-around solid day for the Owls at Saturday’s 14th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Jackson, from Sulphur, Louisiana, bested Vonda Newhouse’s previous 200m record of 23.35 set in 1994 with a winning performance of 23.33 (-1.0 wind). Jackson, who also placed second in the 100m dash (11.73) on Saturday, had run a 23.00 and 23.22 in the 200m earlier this season, but both performances didn’t qualify because of high winds.
“This was a bigtime highlight for Hannah,” Rice women’s T&F head coach Jim Bevan said. “I’m so proud of her. She finally had a legal wind. We’ve seen it coming for a long time. Hannah’s worked extremely hard for this.”
Senior jumper Daisy Ding won her second triple jump of the outdoor season with a mark of 12.95m (42-06.00) while senior teammate Cybil Obiozor also placed second (12.62m) in the event.
Sophomore Giulia Sportoletti won her second javelin competition of the season with a winning mark of 37.14m (121-10). Also in throws, Dreu Dixson placed second overall in the hammer throw (53.79m/176-06) while Ijeoma Ugwunze finished third in the shot put (13.39m/43-11.25) and fourth in the discus (43.97m/144-03).
In other field events, Michelle Fokam finished third among collegiate competitors in the long jump (5.80m/19-00.50) while Ayane Rossano and Kylie Swiekatowski tied for third (collegiately) in the pole vault (3.54/11-07.25).
Senior Hannah Kay braved windy and cold conditions to win her first collegiate event of her outdoor career, winning the 3000m steeplechase in 11:06.12.
The Owls closed out the evening with a big performance from Abigail Cartwright in the 5000m. In her first outdoor competition of the season, Cartwright was victorious with a time of 17:00.88.
Unattached highlights included victories by Elsa Racasan (1500m-4:27.39), Lennie Waite (800m-2:09.83) and Marielle Brisbois (pole vault-3.84m).
In dual meet scoring, teams scores were the following: Rice 99-HBU 76.
