Williams Sets New Rice 5000m Record

Walnut, Calif. -- Senior distance runner Britany Williams set a new Rice outdoor 5000m record, late Friday evening while competing at the prestigous Mt. SAC Relays hosted by Mt. San Antonio College at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Williams placed seventh with a school-record time of 16:11.34 in the 5000m Olympic Dev. University/Open event.

Williams, from San Antonio, Texas, improves upon her own record of 16:19.27 set at Rice's Victor Lopez Classic on March 26 of this year.

Also on Friday,competing in the 5000m Open-A University race, Allison Pye finished 20th with a time of 16:46.76, which is a new season-best for her. Halsey Fowler posted a time of 4:32.69 in the 1500m Open University to place 21st out of 88 runners in eight sections. Fowler's time is a new season-best for her. Keltie John was 36th with a time of 4:32.69 in her first outdoor event of 2010.

On Thursday, in the 3000m steeplechase, Halsey Fowler finished sixth with a time of 10:56.11. Former Owl All-America and current Rice volunteer assistant coach Lennie Waite placed second in the 3000m Invitational University/Open with a time of 9:56.73. Colorado's Emma Coburn finished just ahead of her at 9:56.29.

Marie Thompson, competing in the 10,000m University/Open event placed 14th with a life-time best time of 35:25.10. Thompson's time is also the eighth-best time in school history.
